A friend recently commented that she envied me: “You’re at such a spiritually rich time.” She was referring to this “in-between place” I am in. I have had other times in my life that I consider spiritually fertile, where uncertainty was abundant. In truth, I’m glad to be on the other side of those spiritually rich and uncertain times. Like putting down a good book. I enjoyed the suspense and time while reading, then, felt satisfied when done.
I will be happy to be on the other side of this time of uncertainty and spiritual fertility as well.
But she has a point. The suspense of uncertainty encourages longer meditations and walks and an emotional vulnerability that keeps me open to possibilities. With so much uncertainty, so much is made possible. And, my reliance on what is certain: my spiritual practices, my writing, my companionships (human and animal), my connection with Nature and my Great Friend (Higher Power) assure spiritual bounty.
Just so, living consciously with this in-between time keeps me moving forward. I am in process as they say.
Alas, this in-between time is what makes for a great story as well.
We can’t start a book and let the reader know how everything is going to turn out (though in most cases it does). We have to give them 250 plus pages of suspenseful “in-between.” Even in nonfiction this is more often true than not. We have to let the reader explore the questions we encountered and not give them too much relief before they reach the end. The in-between is where the story happens and where much of life happens too. Perhaps it is because I am living an undivided life (as best I can) that I find myself, once again, in-between one story and waiting for the other to unfold. I want resolution and certainty but the lack of these moves me forward. Again, like a good read: didn’t want it to end: glad it ended.
So, check in with your writing and life dear writerly friend. Are you letting the uncertainties frighten you? What might you be resisting? Are you giving yourself (too many) distractions so that the bounty of this time is not experienced? Are you trying to give your readers the satisfaction of resolution too early in your narrative? Let’s celebrate the suspense of our lives. Let’s open up to what stirs and awakens in us during such times of uncertainty. And write about that!
